Sam Moir

Accountant B.Com ASA

When I was younger I always thought that I would grow up to be a farmer like my parents as we lived in Borden running a mixed cropping and livestock farm. However at the start of high school we moved to Albany for a sea change. From there I moved to Perth after school to complete university with a complete uncertainty around whether or not I would enjoy my chosen university degree, accounting. While at university I completed an internship with RSM in the city and it made me realise that accounting isn’t really what people make it out to be and it set me on my path to enjoying my current role.

When I completed my degree I found a job on Seek for a graduate role with Byfields out in Northam. Taking into account I had only ever been out to Northam once I applied for the role and subsequently received an interview and the ensuing role.

Being from the farming background, the specialisation of Byfields being agriculture and farming in particular really has suited my past and current interests. The most enjoyable thing about being in my role is the value that I bring to our clients, farmer and non-farmer and the responsibilities that I have in relation to creating that value.

Byfields is a professional services organisation that provides tax, advisory and assurances services for a number of SME businesses through the Wheatbelt, Perth and the Narrogin area. From my perspective we provide a fantastic service to our clients both current and future and the value we create is second to none. Looking back at my university studies, the work I currently perform and in the industry that I perform, didn’t even cross my mind while in class working away.

My typical day revolves around general liaising with clients, the ATO and work colleagues, preparing financial statements for companies, trusts and partnerships as well as providing assistance on special tax topics and general business topics. The activities I complete on any given day are changing all the time and it often requires a large amount of communication between fellow accountants. One of the last things I worked on was a new payroll solution we are providing to clients in response to the ATO Single Touch Payroll roll out.

I enjoy the people I work with, we are a number of small teams within offices however we work well together. I particularly enjoy the responsibility given to me and am always looking for the opportunity for more to be passed onto me. I always feel like I achieve something every day, whether it’s for myself educationally or for a client professionally.
